The Lady of Shalott, 2019

Colleen Stapleton

Darling Portrait Prize 2020 Finalist

With her pale skin and flowing, knee-length copper hair, Madeleine has a timeless, classical beauty which makes her look like she’s stepped straight out of a John William Waterhouse painting. As I painted Madeleine I felt a closeness, in terms of subject matter, to Waterhouse; I felt inspired by the parallels in our intentions as artists – to capture the beauty and poetry in what we paint. Discovering the subtle reflected colours in her skin, and capturing her strong but graceful presence made the process of painting Madeleine’s portrait so enthralling.
