Darling Portrait Prize 2020 Finalist
I met Yuge and David Bromley through Gallery One where David and I exhibit. I spent some time at David’s Chapel Street studio and immediately hit it off with Yuge. We share a similar history, and our life stories feel strangely interconnected and related. Yuge comes from communist China and I grew up in communist East Germany. Our parents left their home countries in the same year (1987) to seek a better life in the West, with Yuge’s parents making their way to New Zealand, and my mother heading to Sweden. We both sought professional careers before giving it all up for art.
The Darling Prize is a new biennial prize for Australian portrait painters, painting Australian sitters. The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
