National Photographic Portrait Prize 2015 Finalist
The divine draws the viewer into the subject, Minjarrah’s, soulful gaze. Using a photographic technique of double exposure, with a soft haze of smoke, the audience is reminded of the spirituality of Minjarrah’s Aboriginal heritage. The stiff black blazer not only serves to offset the power of this young man’s composure but also to complement the notion of his sense of pride and belonging. A dancer for the Bangarra dance group, this portrait of Minjarrah aims to capture his peaceful nature as well as his yearning to stay connected to his Aboriginal heritage.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is selected from a national field of entries, reflecting the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
