National Photographic Portrait Prize 2015 Finalist
This is a portrait of my father, Blue Connelly, captured on his 89th birthday. Dad never talks about his service in World War Two. He doesn’t brag about his long career in the RAAF or make a fuss that he was awarded the Order of Australia. He never marches on ANZAC Day. Dad actively avoids any situation in which he would receive praise for the many risks he took in his life to preserve our rights and freedoms. I was happy when he agreed to sit for me in his old uniform. It was out of character.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is selected from a national field of entries, reflecting the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
