National Photographic Portrait Prize 2011 Finalist
I often see my 16-year-old daughter, Mikala Tavener Hanks, sitting at the bottom of the stairs of our home. It is a busy place in the house but it is where she chooses to pause at the end of each school day. This photograph of her shows conflicting imagery…the sophistication and beauty of her hands and posture, yet at the same time we see the awkwardness of her legs, worn shoes and bony knees of a child on the way to adulthood.
The NPPP exhibition is selected from a national field of entries. The annual exhibition, now in its fourth year, reflects the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
