National Photographic Portrait Prize 2026 Finalist
‘This is my favourite place. I grew up beside this river. My family and I always came down here for fishing, swimming and dry season camping. When I come here, I think about happy childhood times when I used to camp here with my mum, my dad and my grandparents. Sadly, crocodiles live here now so we can’t swim or camp here anymore.’
Mirarr photographer Shannon Nango is a Kunwinjku language speaker and a djungkayin (caretaker) for the Madjinbardi area, near Jabiru in Kakadu National Park in the Northern Territory. Nango’s photographs document his connection to Kunred (his homeland).
The People’s Choice Award is generously supported by the Calvert-Jones Foundation, with the artist who wins the most votes receiving $10,000.
