National Photographic Portrait Prize 2026 Finalist
‘The week before Morgs had top surgery, we camped by this pool in Tallaganda, New South Wales. They stood bare beneath the full moon, the stars and gums, in this place that has held us both through many trials and triumphs, farewelling a form that never quite fit them. Returning to the same pool, the water now reflects a body that feels like home. “The breeze kisses my scars, both physical and within. For the forest is no stranger to the strange. I breathe and I belong.”’
Living on Ngunnawal/Ngambri Country in Canberra, Prue Hazelgrove is a queer artist who specialises in the 19th-century wet plate collodion process. Their use of this early photographic technique, with its deep connection to history and tradition, enables them to represent stories that have been historically erased from the narrative.
The People’s Choice Award is generously supported by the Calvert-Jones Foundation, with the artist who wins the most votes receiving $10,000.
Voting closes Wednesday 30 September 2026.
