Artist Thom Roberts, 2025

Tanja Bruckner

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2025 Finalist

type C photograph on paper (image: 118.7cm x 78.5cm. sheet: 150.0cm x 100.0cm. frame: 125.0cm x 85cm)

‘Thom Roberts at home in what he calls “Donkey Big Bird Station”, also known as Pennant Hills. I work with the artist Thom Roberts at Studio A and wanted to photograph him in his home environment. Thom sees and identifies his world and community through the lens of popular culture and the constructed world. For Thom, humans can be skyscrapers, the city’s infrastructure are his friends, and he is a CountryLink Express train. His perspective challenges the everyday humdrum of day-to-day life in this crazy world.’

Tanja Bruckner is a photographer based on Gadigal land/Sydney whose imagery aims to disrupt homogenous narratives and encourage inclusivity. Bruckner is driven by a strong focus on social justice and women’s and LGBTQIA+ rights. Studio A is a supported studio that creates professional pathways for artists with lived experience of intellectual disability.
