The style adopted by an American Civil War general, Ambrose Burnside, from whose name the term ‘sideburn’ originated.

Burnside is famous for the mutton-chop style, whereby the whiskers formed a bristly carpet across the cheeks, meeting in a moustache. Mutton-chop wearers kept their chins hairless.
