The National Portrait Gallery acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country throughout Australia and recognises the continuing connection to lands, waters and communities. We pay our respect to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and to Elders both past and present.

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are warned that this website contains images of deceased persons.

Research library

We have a small, professionally-focussed research library tightly aligned to our collection and exhibition program. The main subject areas include portraiture, Australian biography, and Australian history. We also have a broad range of materials on international artists and art history.

Our Research Library is available by appointment to visiting professionals and bona fide scholars i.e. those writing relevant Honours, Masters or PhD theses.

We can accommodate your visit between 10:00am and 4:00pm on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Simply book your appointment by emailing library@npg.gov.au

We also honour the ‘Library of last resort’ principle, which lets all researchers – under supervision via an appointment – look at an item not available elsewhere.

External borrowing is possible through the Inter-Library Loans system. This means that you can look at the item at a participating library but not take it home. Ask your library if they offer this service.

Where can I see what books you have?

Our research library collection is available to peruse via our Library Catalogue.
