The National Portrait Gallery is delighted to announce the Gallery’s Touring Exhibitions Program has welcomed its one millionth visitor.
The milestone visitor, Suzie Furness, Queensland, arrived at Broken Hill Regional Gallery, New South Wales, to see the Portrait Gallery’s touring exhibition, Bare: Degrees of Undress on 13 November 2017.
Director of the Portrait Gallery, Angus Trumble, is a strong advocate for the opportunities provided by the Gallery’s touring program.
‘The touring exhibitions program has been a key element to the Portrait Gallery’s outreach, ensuring communities outside of Canberra have the opportunity to engage with our collection and the exhibitions we develop,’ Mr Trumble.
‘It is outstanding to be hosting our one millionth visitor to the program in Broken Hill as this is the first time we have travelled an exhibition to the town.’
Broken Hill City Council’s Gallery and Museum Manager, Tara Callaghan, has been overwhelmed by the local community response to Bare, with record numbers attending the opening event.
‘We have had strong support from the community of Broken Hill with the exhibition Bare. It is wonderful to be part of this incredible milestone in the history of the Portrait Gallery’s touring exhibitions program,’ said Ms Callaghan.
Since its inception, the travelling exhibitions program has reached every state and territory of Australia, with more than 30 exhibitions to over 60 different venues.
Bare celebrates the candid, contrived, natural, sexy, ironic, beautiful, and the fascinating in Australian Portraiture and will be on display at Broken Hill Regional Gallery until 19 November 2017. This is its final location before the works return to the national collection in Canberra.
