Since its inception, the National Portrait Gallery's ICONS Syndicate has played a vital role in delivering some of our most ambitions exhibitions, including presentations of Shakespeare to Winehouse: Icons from the National Portrait Gallery, LondonRalph Heimans: Portraiture. Power. InfluenceCarol Jerrems: Portraits and Super Kaylene Whiskey.

In 2026, the ICONS Syndicate will refocus its support toward one of the Gallery's most important and distinctive initiatives: the Commission Program. Unique among National Cultural Institutions, the Gallery's commissioning program pairs Australia's most exciting contemporary artists with some of the country's most accomplished, inspiring and iconic figures. Together, they create portraits that are powerful, singular and enduring.

As part of the ICONS Syndicate, your support will play a critical role in the creation of new works. You will become part of the the commissioning journey, being the first to know about and celebrate the artwork at all parts of its creation. Being an ICON is a unique opportunity ot be part of the National Portrait Gallery's history making work.

Becoming an ICON

Becoming an ICON is made possible through an annual tax-deductible donation of $5,000 per person. ICONS are invited to experience the Gallery's commissioning program in unique and exciting ways, including opportunities to engage with artists and sitters, and being among the first to celebrate the reveal of new commissions. In addition, your support will be acknowledged:

  • on the Gallery’s website
  • in the issue of the Gallery’s Portrait magazine featuring the commission
  • in the Gallery’s Annual Report
