Works of art are fragile and must not be touched.
Adults must supervise children in their care.
Umbrellas, framed baby-carriers, large items and bags over 30cm x 30cm in size, or any other items that may cause damage to a work of art, must be left at the cloakroom. The Gallery reserves the right to check bags, packages and material entering or leaving the building. Please present bags on request.
Food and drink are not permitted in the exhibition galleries. Smoking is prohibited within the Gallery and surrounds.
Photographs may be taken with hand-held devices, in non-restricted gallery spaces for personal use. Flash photography is not allowed, nor is the use of tripods or monopoles. Please observe photography restrictions where labelled. Video recording without prior approval is not permitted.
The Gallery is monitored by closed-circuit televisions.
Animals are not permitted on the National Portrait Gallery premises, except for guide dogs and other registered assistance animals.
All persons entering the Gallery premises do so at their own risk. The National Portrait Gallery reserves the right to ask visitors to leave the Gallery's premises should they not comply with the conditions of entry.
Visitors are advised that caution should be exercised when traversing hard surfaces in wet, icy conditions.
We cannot accept cash payments at the Gallery.
