A new lecture series exclusively for Circle of Friends members.

Three times a year we'll have a guest speaker taking you for an interesting and entertaining journey into artworks from the collection.

Starting off 2023 with a bang is Curator, Collection and Research, Joanna Gilmour, who'll be taking you on a deep dive into portraits by painter, Judy Cassab.

Judy Cassab AO CBE (1920–2015) became one of Australia's most successful and prolific portrait painters, despite arriving in Sydney at a time when abstraction was all the rage in the local art scene – and portraiture was most certainly seen as passe. By taking an in-depth look at two of Cassab's portraits – of the same sitter, but made almost two decades apart – this lecture will map the emergence of the artist's inimitable style throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and show how she silenced the [mostly male] critics who claimed portraiture was a thing of the past.
