WEBVTT 1 00:00:05.040 --> 00:00:10.400 Gary Grealy, 2017 National  Photographic Portrait Prize winner   2 00:00:10.400 --> 00:00:14.000 with the Richard Morecroft  and Alison Mackay portrait. 3 00:00:15.600 --> 00:00:20.880 The portrait was part of a series for an  exhibition called Art Maker Patron Lover.   4 00:00:20.880 --> 00:00:25.680 Every person is researched as much as  I possibly can. The actual process,   5 00:00:25.680 --> 00:00:32.240 if they're comfortable it won't be long  10, 12, 20 frames maybe, but not too much. 6 00:00:34.880 --> 00:00:38.080 The prize has been running 10 years  and I've entered for 10 years.   7 00:00:38.640 --> 00:00:45.840 The very first prize was was at the at the Old  Parliament House and I can still remember that   8 00:00:45.840 --> 00:00:51.040 sort of thrill and excitement. But  every year 10 years I've entered it   9 00:00:51.040 --> 00:00:57.840 and I've been hung eight out of the ten  years... and what happened to those last two? 10 00:01:01.520 --> 00:01:07.440 You enter it sort of with great expectation and  with you know wishing to win but but actually   11 00:01:08.080 --> 00:01:14.560 never really expecting to win and uh when it came  I'm gonna say I was just absolutely gob-smacked.   12 00:01:14.560 --> 00:01:19.360 Yeah it was sort of like it was it was it's a  surreal thing to actually go in and my first   13 00:01:19.360 --> 00:01:28.720 my first feeling of walking through the door to  see the exhibition the nerves the heart is going   14 00:01:28.720 --> 00:01:35.920 but ironically the moment that I stepped  up I felt instantly calm which was bizarre   15 00:01:36.560 --> 00:01:42.000 like it was really an unusual feeling because  there was a lot of people. Man oh man. 16 00:01:46.480 --> 00:01:52.240 It gives you a platform to show you work and for  me it was sort of really quite integral to what I   17 00:01:52.240 --> 00:01:59.520 do because I'd actually started making portraits  of people within the art world and that continued   18 00:01:59.520 --> 00:02:06.000 on and for no reason there was no end game it was  just you know this is what I'm going to do because   19 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:14.320 I like art and then the National Portrait Prize  presented itself which gave an extra purpose for   20 00:02:14.320 --> 00:02:20.720 what I was doing. I could keep doing it and there  was you know more chance for it to be seen. I   21 00:02:20.720 --> 00:02:28.640 think that sort of illustrates a real benefit for  for doing these sort of things. Yeah, I think it's   22 00:02:28.640 --> 00:02:35.840 wonderful and what better what better place for  it to be - when you love portraiture - than the   23 00:02:35.840 --> 00:02:44.000 National Portrait Gallery? Like it really  doesn't get any better than that for me.
