Martin King, an artist who specialises in making works on paper, was born in 1957 in Melbourne. King makes drawings, paintings and prints that reflect his love of the natural world, in particular his interest in birds. He often creates works in book form, making drawings or prints on loose-leaf paper, then inserting these sheets into an open hardback book laid flat and deliberately 'aging' or preserving the book by covering it in wax, freezing it in position. The open book is then framed.
King's work has been exhibited widely and he has completed artist residencies in France, Morocco, India and Antarctica, which he visited in 2006 as the artist in residence for the Australis Expedition. Alongside his art practice, King has worked extensively as an educator: he has lectured on printmaking at the Victorian College of Arts since 1990 and worked as Senior Printmaker at the Australian Print Workshop in Melbourne from 1994 to 2023.
