Georg von Neumayer (1826-1909) was a scientist, magnetician, hydrographer, oceanographer and meteorologist. Born and educated in Germany, Neumayer came to Victoria in the 1850s. He contributed profoundly to the scientific development of the colony before leaving to take up the position of hydrographer to the German Admiralty in 1872.
