Darren McDonald gained his Bachelor of Fine Arts (Painting) degree from RMIT in 2000, having completed an associate diploma in painting at the same institution. He was awarded the RMIT’s John Storey Junior Memorial Scholarship for 2000. He first exhibited solo in 1998 at the Town Hall Hotel in North Melbourne; he again exhibited there in in each of the three years following. Having shown at the West St Kilda RSL and the Continental Café in Prahran, he began to show at Crossley and Scott and Gitte Weise galleries. In 2005 he received the Peter Fay Fellowship.
