Portrait of a Nation

BRUNY ISLAND DISTRICT SCHOOL

Located on the far south coast of Tasmania, Bruny Island District School is Australia’s southernmost school. The Island also marks the birthplace of Trukanini, a traditional Nuenonne woman who struggled throughout her life to find a safe home for her people.

In response to Portrait of a Nation: Australian Schools Portrait Project, Bruny Island students have created their own portraits of Trukanini and visited the memorial that overlooks D’Entrecasteaux Channel, where her ashes were scattered 100 years after her death.
