Portrait of a Nation

HUGHES PRIMARY SCHOOL

Year 3/4TP Process

Students in 3/4TP studied the famous Australian Opera singer Dame Nellie Melba. After visiting the National Portrait Gallery they undertook a number of projects in order to paint a clearer picture of her life. Our contribution to Portrait of a Nation includes diverse artistic representations of Dame Nellie Melba.

Our students ate Peach Melba (the dessert dedicated to the famous soprano). They created three dimensional Peach Melbas using coloured crepe paper.

The final inspiration for our projects was inspired by one of the student's prior knowledge about Dame Nellie Melba. During a tuning-in session one student mentioned that Dame Nellie Melba could break glass with the sound of her voice. This fact intrigued our group and we proceeded to create a series of stained glass windows depicting a timeline of Dame Nellie Melba's life. We used the facts from a novel we were studying about Dame Nellie Melba. Sample stain glass work is attached.

Year 4/5/6 Process

Students in Year 5/6 began their Portrait of a Nation journey by studying the Antarctic explorer, Sir Douglas Mawson. They built sleds out of paddle pop sticks and tested their ability to carry heavy weights across a fragile bridge made of newspaper. This recreated the fateful accident that occurred when Ninnis, Mertz and Mawson were returning to base. Portraits of Mawson were drawn using charcoal, chalk pastels and painted. Other students researched former Australian Prime Minister, William (Billy) Hughes and created sketches and caricatures of him.

Students also undertook independent research projects on people featured in the Portrait of a Nation project. They chose a person of interest and used the website as well as the expertise of our teacher librarian to complete their research. Students completed detailed accounts of the significant contributions these people made to Australia. Students showed what they had learned about their chosen person through art by creating a piece that reflected the person’s life and achievements.
