Portrait of a Nation

ALICE SPRINGS SCHOOL OF THE AIR

The Alice Springs School of the Air is described as ‘the largest classroom in the world’, with students living across 1.3 million square kilometres.

In response to the Portrait of a Nation project, students aged 4-15 have created portraits of their local hero, John Flynn, who plays a vital role in the history of their school.

As founder of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Flynn used new radio technology to broadcast information across vast distances. This innovation permanently transformed the lives of those in outback communities by providing greater access to news, health and education.
