Maurice Newman AC (b. 1938), a career stockbroker, was chairman of ASX from 1994 to 2008, during which period the Australian Securities Exchange was created by the merger of the Australian Stock Exchange and the Sydney Futures Exchange (in 2006). As chair, Newman drove the idea of demutualisation (in 1998) and the ASX listing on itself. Newman began his stockbroking career in the Sydney firm Mullens and Co in 1958. Four years later he moved to a small firm, Rudd Bain Macdonald, which grew over the next decades and became part of Deutsche Bank; Newman was its managing director from 1983 to 1999, was chairman of Deutsche Bank Australia from 1985 to 1999, and was a director of Deutsche Bank Asia Pacific from 1999 to 2001. He has chaired or sat on a number of boards and advisory committees to do with Australian relationships with Asian nations. He was the chairman of the Y2K National Steering Committee from 1997 to 2000 and chairman of the Centre for Independent Studies from 1985 to 1995. He was chairman of Tourism New South Wales from 2002 to 2007, chairman of the Australian Broadcasting Corporation from 2007 to 2011 and has been chairman of the Council and Patrons of the Taronga Foundation since 2000.
