Artist Georgina Alice 'Ina' Gregory (1874–1964) was born in Melbourne, the daughter of barrister, scholar and amateur theologian, John Burslem Gregory and his wife, Alice. Against her mother's wishes, she studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School and attended classes run by Emanuel Phillips Fox at the Melbourne School of Art and at Charterisville, a property in Ivanhoe where Phillips Fox and Tudor St George Tucker ran summer schools in the 1890s. The word 'Camp' inscribed on this drawing of Gregory by Phillips Fox indicates that it was made there. Ina Gregory is one of five women depicted in Phillips Fox's painting Art Students (1895), which attracted criticism when it was first exhibited for showing the subjects in their 'unfeminine' paint-splattered smocks and aprons. A portraitist who came to specialise in landscapes and garden views, Gregory exhibited from 1898 to 1912 with the Victorian Artists' Society and in the 1907 Exhibition of Women's Work.
