Martha Knox (née Rutledge, d. 1903), was the sister of merchant, landowner and banker William Rutledge. She married Edward Knox in Sydney in June 1844. The first of their children - a son, George - was born in April of the following year. Between 1845 and 1864, Martha had another eight children, four sons and four daughters, all but one of whom survived infancy. From 1864, Martha and Edward and their family lived at Fiona, a classical revival house designed by JF Hilly. The house remained in the Knox family until 1946 and is now part of Ascham School.
