Photographer Julius Schaar (1847-1904) operated a number of studios in Dusseldorf during the 1880s, producing portraits in the standard studio style of the period. It appears to have been customary for Cunningham to have his charges photographed in many of the places they visited, the sale of cheap, souvenir images of the troupe being an another method of exploiting them for commercial purposes.
