Little is known of John Chapman, who engraved fine allegorical subjects after the designs of J Smith and Richard Corbould and worked closely with Thomas Macklin on his Shakespeare series. His Helena in the Dress of a Pilgrim is considered to be one of the finest stipple engravings of the eighteenth century. Amongst his other engravings is Ihle's Exact portrait of a Savage of Botany Bay.
The Gallery will be open until 9pm this Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
