Goupil & Cie was established in Paris in 1850, initially as a dealer in prints, paintings and sculptures. By 1872, the firm was producing its own prints and had established a worldwide trade in the reproduction of paintings, with offices in Europe and the USA. The firm was responsible for prints of many significant 19th century paintings, including Tom Roberts's Opening of the First Parliament of the Australian Commonwealth, issued as a photogravure print in 1903.
