Ashley Mackevicius grew up in Melbourne, where he became a freelance photographer after attending art school in the mid-1970s. After several years' working in Melbourne he moving to Sydney, gaining a full time photography job with Australian Consolidated Press in 1984. After some years he returned to freelance work and set up a studio in Balmain, taking photographs for magazines, advertising and book publishing. In 1996 he won the Kodak Australian Photographer of the Year award. Until recently he has worked from his Balmain studio, specialising in photographing food for a variety of clients and purposes. Books for which Mackevicius has provided the photographs include Best Ever Family Food (c. 1990), Healthy Food for Families (c. 1990), Taste of Indochina (1995), Australian Spas and Retreats (c. 2000), Favourite Food (2002), Pass the Bowl (2003), Cooking Seafood (2005), Cooking Curries (2005) and Little Taste of Morocco (2006).
