Look at me (I), 2017

by Saleheh Gholami

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2018 Finalist

I was raised in a place where everyone had to be the same, believe the same, wear the same, and generally have the same qualities in life. It was an environment and society where individuality was not considered. Now I live in Perth, as an Afghan-Australian. I do not feel the same any more, and I think this is a chance to question and observe things around me; I believe this is the best way to narrow the gap between the two societies. I was inspired by Malick Sidibé's cultural portraits and photographs. The subject in these photographs is Zahra Gholami.
