National Photographic Portrait Prize 2017 Finalist
Late afternoon on the drive between Lancelin and Perth, the sun took on that hazy, yellow-orange quality, the kind of light synonymous with Australia and bushfires. I think we could smell it before we saw it in its entirety. What we assumed was a bushfire due to its size turned out to be a controlled burn. As we watched, Finn turned to me to take his and Eva’s photo. Excited by the rarity of the scene, I had already shot through nearly an entire roll when, with one frame left, I made this picture.
The exhibition is selected from a national field of entries, reflecting the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
