Thomas from series Bois to Men, 2014

by Monique Montfroy

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2015 Finalist

Thomas is 16 and lives on the Gold Coast. When asked about his perception of what masculinity means to him, he responded with, ‘Masculinity is not defined by one thing, it is how a man sees himself rather than being influenced by the views of society. To me, masculinity is the way that a man is able to differentiate himself from the stereotypes that are given by society. Whether you are straight, gay, tall, short, fat or skinny. It is the way you are able to express yourself and who you are as a man.’
