National Photographic Portrait Prize 2007 Finalist
East Timor's rebel leader, turned fugitive, Alfredo Reinado, is pictured exclusively after breaking out of a Dili prison almost two weeks before. The rebel leader is seen here in a secret location hiding in the mountains of East Timor after being on the run from Australia's Police and Military. The image followed a week of protracted negotiations - involving a series of calls, text messages and exchange of a secret password - before I was trusted for the photograph. This photo drew attention to the Australian Federal Police and Army's failed attempts at locating him.
Photography is the most pervasive and popular medium for portraiture and makes a natural fit with the Gallery, being a natural extension of the Gallery's longstanding commitment to photography as a contemporary portrait medium.
