National Photographic Portrait Prize 2012 Finalist
Capturing the combination of Teurai Chanakira's beauty, strength and intelligence was the aim for this portrait. Born in Zimbabwe and now living in Australia, Teurai is a writer, fashion model and tireless social campaigner. As the founder of the Elizabeth Chanakira Cancer Trust, Teurai raises awareness of the terrifying and escalating incidents of cancer in Zimbabwe. The Trust is a living tribute to her mother who lost her battle with the disease last year. In our portrait, Teurai is poised delicately at the intersection of vivid living colour and dark shadow. BILLIEJEANISNOTMYLOVER is Jolyon James and Raphael Ruz.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is selected from a national field of entries that reflect the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
