National Photographic Portrait Prize 2023 Finalist
We planted the eucalyptus tree as a seedling when we first moved into this house in the suburbs of Melbourne, and it has grown alongside our family, weathering many seasons over the years. I made this self portrait with my mother and sister by the flowering tree, wearing my grandmother's beautiful patterned cheongsam that we brought back to Australia after she passed away. The resulting image sits at the intersection of my Asian lineage and 'Australian' identity and encapsulates elements that hold deep significance for me and my family.
The exhibition is selected from a national field of entries, reflecting the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
