This is my sister Queeny, wearing clothes from my mum’s hometown when we celebrated the new year back in 2020. I drew this because I miss my family in China, the busy chattering in the house and the deafening fireworks crackling in the distance. I miss the feeling of my heart beating rapidly in my chest as we did the new year countdown together. I remember the icy touch of snow sizzling on my cheeks and nose, the smell of fresh dumplings and biting back the pain in my numb fingers as I gathered snowballs to throw at my mum.

Little Darlings Youth Portrait Prize 2022

Previous exhibition, 2022

Little Darlings is for primary and secondary students, with four separate categories across Kindergarten to Year 12. Responding to the theme ‘identity’, students painted, drew, photographed, printed or combined all of these to make their portrait.
