Karl Fender and I have been friends as long as I can remember. We met in Rome, Italy in the mid 1970s, where we were both working as young architects. Karl is an avowed urbanist; he thrives on life in the city and is committed to sustainable, higher density residential typologies in the pursuance of diversity, opportunity and richness of life in our cities. In my painting, I wanted to capture his vision and creative brilliance coming together in a singular moment – perhaps a realisation or revelation.

The Darling Prize is a new biennial prize for Australian portrait painters, painting Australian sitters. The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
