Darling Portrait Prize 2020 Finalist
These days I do not spend that much time looking at myself, except for seeing my reflection in the mirror during my morning routine. Sometimes I am shocked when the inside feeling doesn't quite match the ageing outside appearance. A towel wrapped tightly around my head to hold back my wet hair is a kind of instant facelift, as it makes the skin on my face taut and lets me see a woman that hasn't changed quite so much. Painting this self-portrait was an act of closer inspection, self-contemplation and acceptance.
The Darling Prize is a new biennial prize for Australian portrait painters, painting Australian sitters. The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
