Darling Portrait Prize 2020 Finalist
Melbourne-based Dr Erica Myers-Davis, born in England to a Jamaican family, has spent nearly half her life in Australia – she’s a true Commonwealth citizen. Myers-Davis is a multidimensional creative: she brings people together on dance floors as DJ Lady Erica; she raises millions of dollars for Australian charities through community service; she heals, through art, those recovering from mental illness; and she advocates for Commonwealth (in particular, Jamaican) veterans and their families who struggle to put a meal on the table. She is fierce and inspiring, yet gentle. I found painting her portrait a challenging but rewarding process.
The Darling Prize is a new biennial prize for Australian portrait painters, painting Australian sitters. The winner receives a cash prize of $75,000.
