Zara, 18, Babinda, FNQ. From the series 'The Land of Oz', 2018

by Lee Grant

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2019 Finalist

I met Zara near Babinda in Far North Queensland. She was travelling with her younger brother, twin sisters, mother and grandparents in an old caravan. Hailing from Tasmania, they had been on the road for fourteen months. Zara was to fly home to Tassie from Cairns a few days after this photo was taken; it would be her first time flying, and, anticipating the experience, she felt both nervous and excited. This portrait is part of an ongoing series titled The Land of Oz.
