National Photographic Portrait Prize 2016 Finalist
The day this image was taken, painter Ben Aitken had badly hurt his back. He was drinking and taking pain killers, and holding himself in a strange protective pose. In nearly every photo he is blurred, except this one, where he stood quietly amidst the paint tins and torn canvases and, just for a moment, looked directly down the lens.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is selected from a national field of entries, reflecting the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
