National Photographic Portrait Prize 2016 Finalist
Cairns-based Les Francis spends his retirement as a “green nomad” of sorts, volunteering his time for conservation groups in need of extra hands. Here he surveys the insects of the wet tropics in far-north Queensland. He does this alone for hours on end, lugging his gear around the state, going where he is needed – doing his bit to give back to the environment. It's a solitary affair, but the buzzings of the insects in the wet tropics are enough to cut through the choking darkness of the forest.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is selected from a national field of entries, reflecting the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
