National Photographic Portrait Prize 2015 Finalist
I came across Joel and his friends one quiet afternoon, mucking about in a truck yard opposite their house. I spotted Joel resting under the tray of a semi-trailer, his arm outstretched, reminding me of a pose seen in a Renaissance painting. Using a 10x8 large format camera slows the process of portraiture down, providing an opportunity to build a rapport with the sitter. In this instance, Joel seemed to forget I was there and drifted off into his own world. I wonder now what he was contemplating. This portrait is from a series documenting outback communities along the Murray Darling Basin.
