National Photographic Portrait Prize 2014 Finalist
I worked with Judy on community arts projects and learned her story: a rich life threaded with a love of theatre, performance and cultural development in regional Australia. A recent chapter in her story tells of breast cancer. Judy turned to her Celtic ancestry for the symbols to help her reclaim the space where her breasts once were. “I went back to my deep Celtic heritage and found dragons! I have replaced absence with presence. They are my survivor’s badge of courage.” Wherever she goes, her dragons are with her.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is selected from a national field of entries that reflect the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
