Rob and Kayla, 2012

by Tom Psomotragos

National Photographic Portrait Prize 2013 Finalist

Robert and Kayla were homeless and living in the streets of Sydney for 12 months when they pitched their tent under the viaduct in Wentworth Park, Glebe, New South Wales, late last year. They lived with a group of homeless people whom I have been documenting for the past four years in this park. In early September this year the cooperative group, consisting of six permanent residents, was re-housed around Sydney by the local council and the Department of Housing. Tents are now no longer allowed in this park and this self-initiated social experiment went largely unnoticed.
