National Photographic Portrait Prize 2013 Finalist
Dennis Del Favero is a world-renowned artist and director of a unit specialising in interactive immersive cinema at the College of Fine Arts (COFA), University of New South Wales. I was shooting his portrait as part of a commission by COFA after they had seen a recent portrait exhibition. I specifically asked him to look up into the massive light source I had built in the studio. It goes against traditional rules of avoiding reflections onto spectacles and, rather, embraces the idea. The result is a glowing gaze which is part ocular and part mechanical – a small allusion to Del Favero’s work and the very nature of photography.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is selected from a national field of entries that reflect the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
