National Photographic Portrait Prize 2013 Finalist
Bruce Pascoe is a writer, teacher and cricketer of Bunurong descent. I first met Bruce at the Melbourne Secondary Teacher's College when he was 18 years old. He was not aware of his Aboriginal heritage at that time. I followed Bruce's career in the media and his discovery of his past. I met him again 40 years later during the filming of a documentary. We talked about his interesting life and achievements, and arranged a sitting in the Koorie Heritage Trust building. As he was holding an early photo of himself in the lift, I quickly took the shot.
The National Photographic Portrait Prize exhibition is selected from a national field of entries that reflect the distinctive vision of Australia's aspiring and professional portrait photographers and the unique nature of their subjects.
