These new works are from a current body of work by Toni Wilkinson which examines a melancholic maternity. 'In modern life, as the universal passion play of separation from the mother's body into individuated life becomes ever more understood and encouraged, the intense need for the maternal matrix increases.' (The Modernist Madonna, 1989)
