National Photographic Portrait Prize 2009 Finalist
Lowitja attended a concert by Jimmy at Tandanya gallery in Adelaide. Jimmy was promoting an Aboriginal health initiative that he had set up using music and song. Lowitja, in the audience, sang along to all his songs and was obviously enjoying his performance immensely. They are old friends and totally respect each other. After the concert was officially over they chatted and mucked around with his guitar and sang. Lowitja had no idea how to play it but let me set up this portrait. It conveys the joyous elements of both of their personalities.
In its second year at the National Portrait Gallery, and for the first time touring to other venues, the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2009 continues to present surprising perspectives on the nature of contemporary portrait photography.
