National Photographic Portrait Prize 2009 Finalist
'Transition' is about the relative safety that transitional accommodation can provide. The subject of the photograph, Kathryn, described her situation: 'I would like to finally be in secure housing. This will enable me and my children to spend more time together stress free. The security and peace of mind it will provide me with will allow my mind to be clear and free to discover what things I would like to do in the future. This involves studies, work and repaying kindness.'
In its second year at the National Portrait Gallery, and for the first time touring to other venues, the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2009 continues to present surprising perspectives on the nature of contemporary portrait photography.
