National Photographic Portrait Prize 2009 Finalist
Hamilton Darroch is an Australian artist who lives and works in London. He is an assistant to the British painter Bridget Riley. This quietly staged portrait suggests a private moment, time regained. The composition does not include the usual instruments of his profession - no paints, brushes or canvas and although the sitter is aware of the camera he does not return the gaze.
In its second year at the National Portrait Gallery, and for the first time touring to other venues, the National Photographic Portrait Prize 2009 continues to present surprising perspectives on the nature of contemporary portrait photography.
